April in the garden

April can transform a garden in just a few weeks. Lawns are growing, blossom is appearing and seedlings are filling windowsills and greenhouses.
It’s also one of the busiest months of the year.
1. Mow Lawns Regularly
As growth speeds up, mowing becomes more frequent. Keep mower blades sharp and avoid cutting grass excessively short.
2. Sow Vegetables
Many vegetable crops can be sown during April, depending on local temperatures.
Always follow the instructions for the particular variety you’re growing.
3. Keep On Top of Weeds
A few minutes spent hoeing regularly can save hours of weeding later in the season.
4. Plant Perennials
April is a good month for introducing new hardy perennials to borders while the soil is warming.
Water thoroughly after planting.
5. Tie In Climbers
New shoots on clematis and other climbing plants can grow rapidly. Gently tie them into supports before they become tangled.
6. Look After Seedlings
Keep seedlings well lit and regularly check moisture levels.
As plants grow, they may need moving into larger pots.
7. Prepare Hanging Baskets
You can start planning and planting summer baskets under protection, but remember that many traditional bedding plants remain vulnerable to frost.
8. Watch for Pests
Aphids, slugs and snails become increasingly active as temperatures rise.
Regular inspection means problems can often be dealt with before they get out of control.
9. Feed Container Plants
Established plants growing in containers depend heavily on you for nutrients. Start an appropriate feeding routine as active growth increases.
10. Keep Protecting Tender Plants
Don’t let a sunny afternoon tempt you into planting everything outside.
Late frosts can still cause considerable damage.
April Rewards the Prepared Gardener
There’s a lot to do this month, but it’s also when your earlier work starts paying off. Keep on top of the basics and enjoy watching the garden come alive.
