June in the garden
June brings long days, warm evenings and gardens packed with growth. It’s a fantastic month to enjoy your outdoor space—but plants can demand plenty of attention.

1. Water Wisely
During dry weather, give plants a thorough watering rather than constantly wetting the surface.
Early morning or evening watering can reduce unnecessary evaporation.
2. Deadhead Flowers
Regular deadheading can keep many flowering plants looking good and encourage further blooms.
3. Mow the Lawn
Continue regular mowing but consider raising the cutting height during prolonged hot or dry weather.
4. Look After Tomatoes
Tie tomato plants to supports where necessary and follow the appropriate training method for the type you’re growing.
Keep watering consistent to avoid large fluctuations in soil moisture.
5. Harvest Early Crops
Start enjoying the results of your vegetable gardening. Harvest crops when they’re ready rather than leaving them past their best.
6. Keep Weeding
Weeds compete with garden plants for water, nutrients and light.
Hoeing during dry weather can make controlling small weeds particularly quick.
7. Check Roses
Deadhead repeat-flowering roses and check foliage for common problems such as aphids and disease.
8. Feed Containers and Baskets
Plants packed into containers quickly use available nutrients. Follow an appropriate feeding programme for the plants you’re growing.
9. Keep Ponds Topped Up
Water levels can fall quickly during warm weather.
If topping up is necessary, rainwater is often preferable where practical.
10. Sit Outside
June gives us some of the longest evenings of the year. Make time to actually use the garden you’ve spent months working on.
Make the Most of June
The main priorities this month are water, weeds and keeping vigorous plants under control. Stay on top of those and there’s plenty of time left to enjoy the garden.
