How this guide was prepared: this is a researched buying guide, not a hands-on shed test. Product details were checked against Amazon UK listings on 11 October 2026. Suitability assessments are our interpretation of those specifications. Listings, variants, sellers and availability can change; confirm the selected model and current price before ordering.
Start with what you need to store
Measure your largest items before choosing a shed. A mower’s handle can take up more space than its cutting deck; bikes need room to turn through a doorway. Include shelving, bags of compost and somewhere to stand without moving everything onto the lawn.
Mark the proposed footprint with string or tape, then place the items within it. Leave a clear route from the door to the tools you use most often. If a workbench is part of the plan, account for its depth and room to work in front of it.
| Nominal size | Starting point for | Check carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Small cabinet | Hand tools, watering equipment or compact folding items | No standing room; lid clearance and internal depth |
| 6 × 4ft | A small tool collection and compact mower | Door width, mower handle and shelf depth |
| 8 × 6ft | More equipment, bikes or a small bench | Access space and usable floor area after shelving |
| 10 × 8ft and larger | A more substantial storage or hobby area | Base cost, site access and local requirements |
These are planning examples, not promises of capacity. Advertised feet measurements are often approximate external sizes. Internal dimensions, roof overhang and door openings are the measurements that decide whether a shed works.
Wood, metal or resin?
Wood: a traditional look with flexibility
Timber can blend into planted gardens and may allow shelves and hooks to be fixed to suitable framing. Overlap boards are common on simpler sheds; tongue-and-groove boards interlock. Compare the actual cladding, framing, floor and roof specification rather than choosing by the name alone.
Dip-treated timber commonly needs further treatment in line with the maker’s instructions. Pressure-treated timber often has different maintenance requirements. Read the guarantee conditions: an anti-rot guarantee is not a promise that glazing, felt, hinges and every other part will last for the same period.
Metal: check the floor and condensation plan
A coated metal shed can suit straightforward equipment storage, but thin panels, numerous fixings and low doorways can make assembly or access less convenient. Confirm whether a floor is supplied. A “foundation kit” may only support flooring that you must buy separately.
Ventilation matters in an unheated shed. Wet tools, damp floors and changing temperatures can contribute to condensation. Keep vents clear, avoid storing wet items, and use only condensation-control measures compatible with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Resin: less painting, but still needs preparation
Resin sheds often appeal to gardeners who want to avoid regular timber treatment. Check reinforcement, floor loading, approved shelf fixings and anchoring requirements. Low maintenance does not mean no maintenance: hinges, seals, roof joints and the base still need attention.
Four Amazon UK options to compare
There is no single best shed for every garden. This shortlist covers different materials and storage formats. We have not assigned test scores or claimed that these models have been tested in our garden. Check prices on Amazon; delivery and installation can change the total cost.
Resin · compact walk-in storage
Keter Darwin 6 × 4ft
Who might consider it: A practical starting point for gardeners who want compact storage without regularly painting timber.
The listing specifies double-wall resin panels, a floor panel, a single door, ventilation and a window. External dimensions are listed as 190 × 122 × 221cm; the usable interior is smaller at 176 × 113 × 212cm.
What to weigh up: The single door and narrow interior need careful checking against your mower. An included floor still needs a suitable level foundation. Use approved shelving rather than assuming the walls can take heavy fixings.

Forest Garden 6 × 4ft Pent
Who might consider it: Worth comparing if you prefer a wooden shed that sits naturally alongside fences and planting.
This Amazon listing is an overlap timber model with one door and one window. It specifies pressure-treated timber and PET glazing. The seller advertises a 25-year anti-rot guarantee; read its conditions and exclusions before relying on it.
What to weigh up: Overlap is a basic cladding choice, so compare board construction and bracing with more substantial tongue-and-groove alternatives. Check what floor and roof covering are supplied, the door opening, and delivery access. Inspect timber and roof covering periodically even where retreatment is not required.
Check this model on Amazon →Metal · equipment storage
Outsunny 7 × 4ft Metal Shed
Who might consider it: An option to compare when you want a metal structure and are comfortable preparing flooring and assembling panels.
The listing specifies a coated steel structure, four ventilation slots, a sloping roof and lockable double doors. It lists external dimensions of 213 × 130 × 185cm, an interior of 203 × 117cm, and a door opening of 96 × 152cm.
What to weigh up: The foundation kit is a frame for adding your own flooring, not a finished floor. The 152cm doorway is low for many adults. The listing calls for three people for assembly and warns against construction in windy weather; wear gloves and follow the manual. A lock is not included.

Keter Store It Out Nova
Who might consider it: Useful to compare for a patio or small garden when you need storage rather than a building you can stand inside.
The listing specifies an 880-litre cabinet with top and front access, a floor and a lockable closure. External dimensions are listed as 132 × 71.5 × 113.5cm, with an interior of 122 × 61 × 108.8cm. Shelves are not included.
What to weigh up: This is not a walk-in shed. Check the mower with its handle folded, lid-opening clearance and the size of anything you hope to store. Capacity in litres alone does not tell you whether an awkwardly shaped item will fit.
Check this model on Amazon →The base is part of the purchase
A shed is only as useful as the foundation underneath it. Follow the model’s instructions for base dimensions, support, anchoring and drainage. An integral plastic floor does not replace a level supporting foundation, and a metal foundation frame does not automatically include a walking surface.
Concrete, paving or a suitable purpose-built base may be options, depending on the shed and ground conditions. Check what the manufacturer accepts before buying materials. Avoid improvising an uneven support: it can affect door alignment, drainage and the structure.
Plan access and assembly
Measure gates, side passages and tight turns for the delivery panels. Confirm whether delivery is kerbside or includes carrying the kit into the garden. Ask about stairs, restricted access and postcode exclusions before ordering.
Allow space around the shed for construction, roof overhang, opening doors and future maintenance. Read the assembly manual in advance, arrange the recommended number of helpers and work in suitable weather. Check all parts before starting and photograph delivery damage promptly.
Apex or pent roof?
An apex roof has two slopes meeting at a ridge; a pent roof has one slope. Choose by height, access and where rainwater will run. Consider gutters and ensure drainage works within your garden. Compare door and eaves height rather than relying only on the maximum roof height.
Budget for the finished shed
Compare the complete project cost: shed, delivery, base materials, separate flooring, anchors, locks, roof covering, shelving, treatment and installation. A cheaper kit may become less attractive once missing parts and labour are included.
Check seller details, returns arrangements for a bulky assembled item, warranty registration and availability of replacement panels or fittings. When reading customer feedback, look for the exact size and model you are buying: reviews can be grouped across variants.
Security and everyday use
A lockable door is useful, but it does not make a shed a secure store for valuable equipment. Check hinges, the hasp, anchoring and your insurer’s requirements. Windows provide working light but also show the contents; think about where the shed will sit and what will be stored inside.
Before committing to the site, check the relevant local planning requirements and any property, lease or listed-building restrictions. Rules depend on location and circumstances; do not assume that every garden building qualifies automatically.

Common shed buying questions
Is a 6 × 4ft shed big enough for a mower?
Sometimes. Compare the mower’s full dimensions, including its handle, against the shed’s internal dimensions and clear door opening. Allow room to turn it and retrieve other tools.
Does an included floor mean I do not need a base?
No. A floor panel normally needs a suitable level supporting foundation. Follow the chosen model’s installation instructions.
Which shed needs the least maintenance?
Resin or coated metal may require less routine treatment than timber, but all sheds need inspection and upkeep. Choose the exact product and its maintenance requirements rather than assuming the material makes it maintenance-free.
Should I buy a cabinet instead of a shed?
A cabinet can save space if everything fits and you only need storage. Choose a walk-in shed if standing room, a bench or a larger collection of tools matters.
Our buying approach: choose the smallest footprint that comfortably holds your equipment, then compare complete costs and maintenance. For a compact resin shed, start by comparing the Darwin. For a traditional timber appearance, investigate the Forest model. Compare the Outsunny if you can provide flooring and accept its low doorway. The Nova is the space-saving cabinet alternative.
