The gardener behind the guides

Hello, I’m James

Hi, I’m James Greenwood, the writer behind Gardeners Guide.

Gardeners Guide was created with a simple idea: gardening advice should be practical, straightforward and based on what actually works.

I’m a keen home gardener, not someone who claims to know everything there is to know about gardening. Like most gardeners, I’m constantly learning—trying different plants, experimenting with new ideas, using different tools and occasionally discovering what not to do along the way.

This website is where I share what I learn.

Explore Gardeners Guide

What you’ll find here

Whether you’ve just got your first garden or you’ve been growing for years, find practical advice to help you get more from your outdoor space.

Our approach

Real gardening, real experience

There’s an enormous amount of gardening information online, but sometimes you just want a straightforward answer from someone who’s actually tried it.

That’s what I want Gardeners Guide to provide.

Where possible, the guides and reviews you’ll find here are informed by real experience in the garden.

If I review a gardening product I’ve personally used, I’ll tell you how I’ve used it, how long I’ve owned it and what I’ve actually found useful—or frustrating—about it.

If I’m documenting something I’m growing, I’ll share what worked, what didn’t and what I’d change next time.

And when an article requires additional information, I aim to research it carefully using reliable sources rather than simply repeating what everyone else says.

Reviews & transparency

Products I recommend

You’ll occasionally find product recommendations and affiliate links throughout Gardeners Guide.

I believe recommendations are much more useful when there’s genuine experience behind them.

When I’ve personally owned or tested a product, I’ll make that clear and explain how it performed in real-world use.

I’ll also tell you about any drawbacks I’ve found. A product doesn’t suddenly become perfect because there’s an affiliate link attached to it.

Some links on Gardeners Guide are affiliate links. This means the website may receive a small commission if you purchase something through one of these links, at no additional cost to you.

These commissions help towards the cost of running Gardeners Guide and allow me to continue producing new guides, testing products and improving the website.

Always learning

Learning as the garden grows

One of the things I enjoy most about gardening is that you’re never really finished learning.

Every season is different.

Something that thrives one year might struggle the next. A new plant might become a favourite. A gardening product you weren’t sure you needed might become something you use constantly.

That’s why Gardeners Guide will continue to evolve too.

I’ll be documenting projects, testing gardening products, growing different plants and updating existing guides as I learn more.

When something goes particularly well, I’ll share it.

And when something goes completely wrong, I’ll share that too.

Sometimes that’s where the most useful lessons come from.

Welcome to Gardeners Guide

Whether you’re trying to grow your first potatoes, improve a tired lawn, make your own compost or simply work out what needs doing in the garden this weekend, I hope Gardeners Guide makes things a little easier.

You don’t need to be an expert to create a garden you enjoy.

Sometimes you just need a good place to start.
